Some Common Questions Regarding the Adhan

Question: Why do we say “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” in response to “Hayya ‘alas-Salah” and “Hayya ‘alal-Falah”?
Answer: When the Mu’azzin says, “Hayya ‘alas-Salah” (Come to prayer) and “Hayya ‘alal-Falah” (Come to success), the meaning of “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” is that the power to avoid sin and the strength to perform good deeds comes only from Allah’s grace and help. If we do any righteous deed, like going to the mosque or performing prayer, it is solely due to Allah’s favor and guidance.

Question: When the Adhan from multiple mosques is heard simultaneously, which one should we respond to?
Answer: You should respond to the first Adhan you hear, or respond to the Adhan from the mosque closest to your home.

Question: How should we respond to the Fajr Adhan?
Answer: When the Mu’azzin says, “As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm” (Prayer is better than sleep), you should respond by saying, “Sadaqta wa bararta,” which means, “Indeed, you have spoken the truth and done a good deed.”

Question: Can we respond to the Adhan while in a state of impurity (without ablution or in a state of major impurity)?
Answer: Yes, you can respond to the Adhan. Remember that while in a state of impurity, you cannot recite or touch the Quran, but you are allowed to say other forms of remembrance, supplications, and praises of Allah.

Question: What should we do if the Adhan begins while we are reciting the Quran?
Answer: It is recommended (mustahabb) to pause the recitation of the Quran, respond to the Adhan, and then continue reciting the Quran afterward.

Question: Should we respond to the Adhan while in the bathroom or taking a shower?
Answer: No, it is not recommended to respond to the Adhan while in the bathroom or taking a shower.
